Aw yiss, inventing us some headcanon draenei lore! Observant readers may remember that we alluded to these personal symbols back in Vid’s character profile.
If you look at official WoW artwork, there are TONS of different draenei sigils/symbols depicted. Why ARE they different? Do they represent different magical abilities? Or is it like we’ve described here, something biological, like an individual’s unique DNA footprint?
Personally, I think it’s a lot cooler to imagine those symbols as displays of personal identity rather than just to indicate “I’m using magic.”
Burn-to-a-crisp!Rades is pretty awesome ahhaha
Love this – just do.
It’s called gift of the Naaru… Maybe that’s how he naaru sees them, or that’s how their souls look like to the naaru. Almost like baby naaru, because the light is in all of them but slightly different.
I kinda like the family crest idea though, it’s a pretty novel approach. 🙂
A little preoccupied indeed. 😛
Begin Vid headcanon:
There’s a large, worn book somewhere in the library at Shattrath. They keep it not far from the census book, with the record of all missing/deceased persons (it’s a heavy book). But in THIS book all the symbols of every draenei family are inscribed. They’ve tried to keep track of the symbols whose lines have been snuffed out, but it’s difficult work and so it’s not very well done. They’re all recorded regardless. That’s why draenei don’t have family names – they have these instead.
/end Vid headcanon
I don’t know how to feel about that.
On the one hand I think it’s a cool idea.
On the other hand that makes me sad, because only one book implies they have lost many of the family symbols.
I guess it depends on the size of the book. Remember that not that many of them left Draenor in the first place. If some of those were family units it’d be less! But, you could also just say that it’s sad, and that works because things for draenei are sometimes pretty sad. ?
okay I’m confused…..are they still in pandaria? I could have sworn they were leaving the continent at the end of the first chapter.
Looks like they’re at Thornfang Hill in HFP.
Cygnia is exactly right, they’re now in Hellfire!
okay, I guess the little dead guys on the ground looked like mini-Sha to me. Thanks for the clarification!
Heh. I’ve been leveling my namesake’s Hunter there this past week, so it’s sort of stuck. 🙂
I love how you come up with stuff like this off the top of your head. It may not be official canon but I don’t care. It makes sense so I’ll use it in my RP too.
